According to the source listed as EU Commission — Digital Policy, the European Commission has published the reference to the first harmonised standard supporting the implementation of the AI Act in the Official Journal of the European Union. The standard EN 18286:2026 „Artificial intelligence – Quality management system for EU AI Act regulatory purposes“, developed by CEN and CENELEC, was published via Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/2274.
What the standard covers
According to the Commission, EN 18286 gives providers of high-risk AI systems a clear legal route to meet the quality management system requirements under Article 17 of the AI Act. Providers that implement the standard benefit, the Commission says, from a presumption of conformity for the Article 17 requirements it covers.
Context
The Commission says EN 18286 is built around the AI system lifecycle and is designed to be layered on top of existing standards such as ISO/IEC 42001, ISO 9001 or sector-specific systems such as ISO 13485, rather than replace them. Organisations without ISO/IEC 42001 can, according to the Commission, use the standard to extend an existing QMS or build one. Whether this pays off for a specific company depends on whether its systems actually count as high-risk AI, which has to be checked case by case. The Commission expects further harmonised standards to follow.
