What happened
As part of the Invest in Germany Summit with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) signed a Joint Declaration of Intent with NVIDIA. According to the federal government, the partners agree to advance an initiative to develop state-of-the-art AI models for physical AI.
Background
According to the federal government, the initiative builds on Germany's industrial data, manufacturing capabilities and engineering expertise. It is embedded in the federal government's AI roadmap and in the Plattform Industrie 4.0. The goal is to bring industrial AI systematically into widespread use and to establish an industrial AI ecosystem in Europe.
According to the federal government, the Plattform Industrie 4.0 is the core element of the partnership. It is a network of politics, industry, research and trade associations, and is being aligned to industrial AI.
Open models and the Mittelstand
According to the federal government, a special focus lies on developing specialized, open models for industrial AI, based on NVIDIA Nemotron and NVIDIA Cosmos. NVIDIA plans to expand its existing engagement with German partners. Research institutions, industry, and small and medium-sized enterprises are to be included.
According to the NVIDIA blog, Merz and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the Mittelstand in particular. Merz said there, in the blog's translated rendering, that Germany's biggest advantage is its Mittelstand and urged companies to open their doors for AI to make use of their data.
Assessment
For German companies, the initiative could mean more funding offers and network access around industrial AI – provided the Plattform Industrie 4.0 opens these to the Mittelstand. It remains open which concrete funds, timelines and outcomes the declaration covers; the available sources give no figures on this.
