What is reported
According to The Information, OpenAI is pulling customers away from Anthropic with significant price cuts. Rippling CEO Parker Conrad said his company raised OpenAI's share of its coding workload from 16 to 52 percent, while Anthropic's share fell from 57 to 18 percent. Replit switched after an offer of more than 30 percent off a contract worth over 100 million dollars per year. DataCamp CEO Jonathan Cornelissen reports an 80 to 90 percent cost reduction.
What lies behind it
According to the source, OpenAI is partly buying market share at the expense of its own margins. At the same time, more efficient models and infrastructure are said to have enabled real price cuts in the Sol and Luna model lines. An investor memo also points to slower growth at Anthropic between the second and third quarter.
Classification
For enterprise customers, a price war can noticeably change how AI spending is calculated. Whether such terms apply to other companies cannot be derived from the sources; the cited discounts concern individual cases. It remains open how sustainable these prices are if OpenAI's margins continue to be squeezed.
