What does AI really cost?

The AI Price Index shows what 1 million tokens cost across the leading AI models: in euros, from the providers' official price lists, converted daily at the ECB rate. Plus the subscription prices of the major AI services, each with the day it was last checked.

How we measure

Honest and verifiable – only official price lists and the ECB reference rate.

    Official price lists

    A program reads the USD list prices every day straight from the providers' official price lists. For open models and models without a price list of their own, we use the official price list of a major cloud provider and name it. Where we do not read a price list automatically, we check it by hand and say so next to the price.

    Checked twice

    We take over a price change only once the provider's page shows it on two days in a row and a second source confirms it. Without a second source we wait seven days, and if a second source still shows the old price, we check by hand. Promotional prices and unclear notes are never taken over automatically; until then the last confirmed price applies.

    Converted at the ECB rate

    Every day we convert to euros at the European Central Bank's official reference rate – so the price moves even when the dollar tariff is stable.

    One comparable number

    Per model we form a blended price (input:output weighted) so models can be compared with a single figure.

    Forward-only history

    Each day's value is frozen on the day it is measured. When a model in the basket changes, we do not recompute past days; we mark the change in the curve.

We show standard on-demand list prices of the shortest context tier, without cache, batch or promotional discounts. For DeepSeek the peak-hour price counts. For Llama and Amazon Nova we show the AWS Bedrock list price, for Cohere Microsoft Azure's. We are not affiliated with any provider.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AI Price Index?

The median price of the flagship models in the index basket (one per major provider) for 1 million tokens, in euros. A single number showing what intelligence at the frontier costs. The star in the price table marks the models in the basket.

Where do the prices come from?

From the providers' official price lists in US dollars. A program reads them every day and converts them at the ECB euro reference rate. Each price shows its status: when its price source last confirmed it, when we checked it by hand, or that a new price is being confirmed.

What does “blended” mean?

Input and output tokens are priced differently. The blended price weights both (3:1 by default) so a model needs a single, comparable figure.

Why does the index move when providers rarely change prices?

Because we convert to euros daily at the current ECB rate. The euro price tracks the exchange rate – and jumps the moment a provider changes its dollar tariff.

Are these the costs I actually pay?

These are list prices. Your effective cost depends on caching, batch processing, volume discounts and how many tokens your tasks need – which we work out concretely in the AI ROI calculator.

What does ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro or Copilot cost?

The monthly subscription prices of the major AI services, as seen from Germany and with a check date per provider, are in the “Subscription prices” section above. The €/token index above that is the developer/API view; the subscription prices are the end-user view.

Why do some subscription prices show dollars instead of euros?

Where the provider localises for Germany, we show euros incl. VAT. If the official source lists prices only in US dollars, we retain that source currency and state market and tax status separately.
