According to a report by TahawulTech.com, which cites Bloomberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has outlined plans for the company to invest $2 billion in Europe in an effort to increase the adoption of AI technology and of Nvidia's products. Huang said the new investments would come on top of the $8 billion the company had previously committed to the continent.
New funding and a focus on open models
Huang also announced new funding for the French start-ups Doctolib, Genesis AI, Pigment and Entalpic. He additionally promoted open-source models, arguing that their lower costs and greater flexibility could help Europe close the gap with the US in advanced AI. Nvidia is a major partner of the French company Mistral AI, which develops open-weight models; Nvidia has invested in Mistral and supplies accelerators for its data centres. Huang said, according to Bloomberg: "Open models are important as they can be customised for languages and for your own sovereignty."
What this could mean for companies
For German companies, more capital flowing into European AI infrastructure and open models could over the long term widen the range of alternatives to US providers. Whether and when these investments actually materialise, and which concrete offerings result from them, remains open based on the available information. The report relies on statements made by Huang; the sources do not indicate a binding commitment in the sense of a concluded contract.
