Crusoe has confirmed to TechCrunch that it sold an unfinished data center project in southeastern Wyoming to Google. The Denver-based company, which TechCrunch says was recently valued, had announced the project last year with Blackstone-backed infrastructure company Tallgrass, with plans to scale it to 10 gigawatts of power capacity.
Why the sale is revealing
According to TechCrunch, Google reportedly raised concerns about cost and construction timeline under Crusoe's management before taking over development. Google had previously tried and failed to land Crusoe as a customer for the project. Google did not disclose the purchase price; it has announced plans to invest $17 billion in the campus.
Context
The case shows, per TechCrunch, how difficult it can be for independent data center developers to deliver large projects on time and within budget, given challenges in securing equipment and power, as well as growing opposition from local communities. The sources do not show how this affects other large projects. According to the report, Google still works with Crusoe, which is developing another data center for Google near Amarillo, Texas.
