ChatGPT merges Chat and Work – usage limits become token-based

What changes

According to an updated OpenAI support page, Plus, Pro and Business plans will share a single token budget for ChatGPT and Codex starting in December. The background is that OpenAI is integrating its agentic Work features into the main interface. The report comes from The Decoder (DE), which refers to OpenAI's support page.

How usage is measured

Usage is measured in tokens, the units of information a model processes and generates. More complex models and tasks consume more tokens and therefore more of the budget. The remaining balance and reset times are to be viewable under "Settings". Once the limit is reached, users can wait for a reset, switch plans or buy extra credits. Simple instant chats with Instant models do not count toward the budget.

Context

If the budget works in practice as The Decoder (DE) describes, ChatGPT formally remains a flat-rate service, but on cheaper plans with heavy use the quality of results could decline. For the higher-priced plans OpenAI recently announced doubled limits, presumably in preparation for the merger. Professional users should keep an eye on their own consumption once the usage display in the settings is available.
