Elon Musk's AI company xAI has released its Grok-1 language model as open source. The weights and network architecture of the 314-billion-parameter model are now available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license – anyone can download, modify, and redistribute the code.

Musk's strategic reversal against OpenAI
The release is no accident: it follows immediately after Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI, demanding that ChatGPT and its models also be made open source. Musk argues that OpenAI broke a "Founding Agreement" stipulating that AI systems should be open and nonprofit. OpenAI rejected the claims and published emails suggesting Musk himself agreed to commercialization plans.
With the Grok release, Musk now sends a signal: xAI is taking the path of transparency – at least outwardly.
What users get – and what they don't
Crucially: the released model is not the current production version of Grok. It consists of base weights from the pre-training phase in October 2023. This means the model was trained on large amounts of text data but received no specific fine-tuning for concrete tasks.
Anyone wanting to simply try Grok is better served on the X platform – where the production version runs. However, that requires an X Premium+ subscription.
For developers and researchers, however, a window opens: they can study the architecture, run the model locally, or use it as a foundation for their own projects.
The message in the code
xAI accompanied the release with a code of conduct consisting of just one sentence: "Be excellent to each other." – a reference to the 1989 sci-fi film "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure." A humorous contrast to the legal battles currently surrounding OpenAI.
The model was apparently uploaded by Igor Babuschkin, an AI researcher and xAI employee.
What this means for European enterprises
The Grok release could be of interest to German AI developers and startups – especially those working on European, independent models. A freely available 314-billion-parameter model lowers the barrier to entry for experimentation and research significantly. At the same time, pressure intensifies on European players to keep pace with open-source approaches. The question remains: how will German and European AI initiatives respond to this opening? And will the EU AI Act increasingly regulate or promote such open-source releases?
