Digital Minister Wildberger wants to tax AI revenue in Germany

Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) argues, according to heise online citing the Tagesspiegel, that revenue from artificial intelligence in Germany should be taxed. In his view, the money should pay for restructuring the labor market.

Wildberger told the Tagesspiegel: "We have to tax the extremely high revenue from this technology, and with the money we can finance the restructuring; that is also my approach." If growth and value creation arise in Germany, taxes must also be paid here.

Context

Wildberger also expects, according to the report, that AI will fundamentally change the world of work. In the long run, more employment will emerge, but in different jobs than today. Retraining and new activities, for example in skilled trades or care, would need to be financed, the minister said.

According to the report, Bill Gates has long called for taxing robots and AI to reduce the incentive to replace people with machines.

The report reflects a position of the minister. Concrete design or a timeline for such a tax is not named in the sources.
