Anthropic has expanded Claude Voice Mode. Users can now choose between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models—previously, the voice feature was limited to the faster but less capable Haiku. The move addresses a key limitation: the old Voice Mode wasn't suited for longer conversations or complex tasks.

How the new voice mode works
The interface gets smarter: Voice Mode remembers which model you last used in text chat and automatically applies its fastest version. This eliminates constant switching. For extended discussions—gathering feedback on communication style, pitching to clients, or brainstorming market research—this is a significant upgrade from the previous version.
The critical difference from OpenAI: While ChatGPT Voice Mode received improved conversational abilities, it still cannot tap into external apps. Claude, by contrast, can now compose emails in Gmail, modify calendar entries in Google Calendar, or create documents in Notion—all via voice.
The voice AI race heats up
The expansion is strategic timing. OpenAI introduced new Conversational Models and updated ChatGPT Voice Mode just weeks ago. Anthropic is now responding—with a strategy emphasizing functionality over conversational refinement alone. However, Anthropic did not overhaul the underlying voice engine; improvements in interruption handling and other conversational nuances remain absent.
The new Voice Mode launches in beta for all users across all platforms today. Free users are restricted to Haiku and a single connected app—those wanting Opus or Sonnet with full app integration require a paid subscription.

For teams in German-speaking markets, Voice Mode becomes more practical: German language support is included, and integration with standard tools like Gmail, Slack, and Notion positions Claude as a genuine productivity assistant for daily workflows.
