It states that Google does not show personalized ads based on content from Google Drive, Gmail or Google Photos – "unless you make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized advertising". According to heise online, this allows Google to show ads based on data from Gmail and user photos.

Background

Heise online notes that Google has offered the linking of these apps with the AI assistant Gemini and the AI mode of its search engine for some time. Earlier this year Google gave Gemini more access and more context as "Personal Intelligence"; in April, Gemini's personalization features were extended to Germany.

What advertisers get – and what they do not

According to heise online, advertisers do not automatically gain access to Google's services through this change. Google promises not to share names and email addresses, but only to select ads accordingly. There are exceptions, but they require users' explicit consent: for example, a phone number is transmitted when someone taps the "Tap to call" button of an ad.

Assessment

For you as a user, this means: personalization can apparently be switched off. If you do not want to disclose personal data for targeted advertising, you can, according to heise online, deactivate "personalized recommendations" in Google's settings under "Data and privacy". However, according to Android Authority, as reported by heise online, this separation does not delete data Google has already collected. Heise online also suggests that deleting a photo or an email likely does not reverse the fact that Google has already stored this data in the search engine or in Gemini.

If you use Gmail, Drive or Google Photos and link them with Gemini, the change could therefore also affect your own data, even if you never actively released it for advertising. The source gives no figures on how widespread this is or on consequences for users in Germany; it remains open how the rule is assessed under EU data protection law.

Sources

heise online

Editorially owned by Ideal Syka.
